Beautiful if often based on some combination of inner beauty and outward beauty illustrate and explain.

Introduction

The phrase refers to the outward beauty of a person. When we refer to something beautiful we are usually referring to that something’s outward appearance. What the phrase tries to emphasize that the outward appearance of a person counts for nothing, but it is what lays beneath the skin, the actual person him or herself is what really matters. So it means that it should not matter what you look like on the outside, the real beauty is in the personality1.

Definition

The characterization of a person as “Beautiful” if often based on some combination of inner beauty and outward beauty, where inner beauty includes psychological factors such as personality, intelligence, grace, politeness, integrity, whereas outward beauty includes physical attributes which are valued on a subjective basis. Standard of beauty changed over time based on changing cultural values. However, human who are relatively young, with smooth skin, well proportioned bodies and regular feature have traditionally been considered the most beautiful throughout the history. Beauty presents a standard of comparison and it can cause resentment and dissatisfaction2.

Background

The narrow concept of “beauty is skin deep” is that the outer beauty is not only the measurement of a person’s beauty but also the inner beauty matters equally. We must realize that a person can be beautiful on the outside but he may not carry the qualities of an ideal person, like personality, politeness, integrity, elegance. On the other hand the person who is not really good looking form outside but has excellent personal characteristics inside, maybe considered as a beautiful person . Broadly this issue can be applied in every sector of our daily life. When we want to buy something we have to put emphasis on the quality of goods not on the outward package. The packet of a good may be very attractive and gorgeous but their quality may be substandard, then if you want to buy this product, it will be of no use. So from the manufacturer’s point of view, it will be essential that they will try their level best to control their quality of the product.

Their responsibility is to develop, produce and market those products that secure the long term economic performance of the corporation. In contrast if they focus on short term profit motive and ignore the quality assessment then will disappear from the market very soon. So we think quality is the best yardstick of success of an individual or corporation that’s why we put a significant amount of effort to prove that outward beauty is temporary and inner quality is ever lasting.

Hypothesis

We assume that “Beauty Is Skin Deep” is true. So every person or corporation has to put emphasis on quality development.

The primary sources

Primary data was collected by conducting a sample survey on 50 people studying in four different universities. They are Brac University, Dhaka University, AIUB and North South University. Ethical proof through theories

As we discussed that the secondary source is highly focused on theory of ethics, we will try to give or provide some important definitions of various ethical issues and then we will try to relate it with the context of the phrase “Beauty Is Skin Deep”. In general, ethical theories are the rules and principles that determine right and wrong for a given situation. According to Richard De George there are two extreme positions of ethical theory, they are: Ethical absolutism and Ethical Relativism3. Ethical absolutism claims that there are eternal, universally accepted moral principles. For example: people all over the world expect that their prime minister or president would be very honest, enthusiastic, active, forward looking or dynamic. No nobody expects that their precedent would be heroic but dishonest, lazy, corrupted, biased. That is why American’s choose Mr. Barak Obama rather Mr. Mitt Romney as their president. Ethical relativism claims that morality is context dependent and subjective. For example: in case of a high skill oriented job every one seek for those person who have the required skill rather than the outward appearance but in case of searching for an actor or an actress for a cinema in Bollywood every director search for a good looking men or women

3 Matten, A.2004.Business ethics. Evaluating business ethics.92-115

The normative ethical theory means that propose to do the morally correct way of acting whenever in business or society. For example: there are two waiters in a restaurant, both of them are good looking handsome and smart. One of the waiters is very fast and dynamic to customers call and the other is a bit slow and lazy and tries to avoid his duty. So the manager or owner of the restaurant would ethically like the first waiter and pay better salary to him. According to the theory of egoism an action is morally right if the decision maker freely decide in order to pursue either their desire or their interest4. For example suppose a manager suggest his senior executive to change their marketing strategy through increasing promotional activities and advertisement, making more presence in media, making packaging pattern more attractive, for the greater penetration in the market. But another manager focus on not only by increasing the marketing activities but also the improvement of product in terms of quality which will help them to sustain in the market for a long time. Now if the second option becomes true then it would be a good example of egoistic ethics

Utilitarianism suggests that an action is morally right if it results in the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people affected by the action5. According to this theory every action has two sides one is beneficiary and another is looser. After the construction of Taj Mahal all its architect’s hands were cut down so that they could not build a similar structure again. The benefit of this action is that the world gets a one piece, ever wondering structure. But the architectures had become obsolete, which is unethical. According to justice theory there are two procedures that are Fair procedure and Fair outcome procedure. According to Fair procedure every one must be given equal opportunity to compete or access to the facilities, for example: every men or women who have the graduation degree should have access to the government job regardless weather he is good looking or not. Fait outcomes suggest that the outcome will be equally distributed among the employees regardless of their performance, for example: two employees of a firm get the same amount of incentive bonus though one is very efficient and the other is lazy, which is unethical.

5 Matten, A.2004.Business ethics. Evaluating business ethics.92-115

There are some factors that influence on decision making this can be divided into two sides: one is individual factor and another is situational factors. Individual factors include those factors which are given by birth and those acquired by experience and socialization, suppose a person is very intellectual from childhood and the other takes time to decide on any matter. Here the first person is more preferable incase of decision making rather than the second person. On the other hand situational factors suggest that people will take decision on the basis of situation. Generally in case of job the academic background is highly required but there are some jobs that prefer the outlook rather than high academic background, for example: Air hostess, Customer care officer etc.

Ethics in Business

The emergence of large corporation with limited relationship and sensitivity to the communities accelerated the development of formal ethics regimes6. This ethical regime includes a wide range of discipline such as finance, human resource management trade union, etc7. It is the moral obligation of all business entities to maintain their rules, regulation and laws that are provided by the regulatory bodies. Now a day it has become very common that service providing institution fails to maintain their business principles due to profit motivation. When the financial institution over look rules and regulation then they become involved in unethical activities which causes crisis in the financial sector. If we consider a recent scam of Hallmark group then we can understand how the unethical activities result in a crisis. The Hallmark group borrowed tk.2600 crore from the Ruposhi Bangla branch of Sanali Bank Limited without submitting proper security mortgage and documents. In that case some of the dishonest officers of Sanali Bank helped the group to get the loan without submitting the mandatory documents.

7 O’Neill, O.2002.A question of trust: the BBC Reith lectures 202.cambridge:Cambridge University press

Ethics is equally important in case of marketing8. Ethics becomes important in case of marketing at the end of 1990s. It is the responsibility of marketer or salesman to inform customers with all kind information that concern with them , but sometimes the marketer or salesman try to avoid customers to give information to the customer or want to hide. If we consider the case of fast-food item then we will see that they want to disclose those qualities that attract the young customer, but they have less interest in disclosing the negative side of their product. For example there is some complain against the world famous fast-food brand Mc Donald’s that by taking their food items, people becomes fat very quickly. And for these customers generally blame that their food contains high calorie9. But Mc Donald’s merely agree with this matter.

On the other hand, the firm which is very much strict to their quality assurance they become very popular and sustain for a long time in the industry. There are some companies or manufacturer which is very much strict to uphold their quality and there by ethical practice such as: Uniliver, IBM, General Motors, HP, KFC etc. As a result they also become successful in the market for a good ethical practice.

Real Life Example

Here we will try to analysis some law, act that are designed for the well being of the people of Bangladesh which are in line with our national constitution. Although they are clearly defined but in reality they have rare use or even in use it is very limited. Bangladesh has enacted “Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009” to deal with the consumer affairs. But the scenario is very poor because legal protection to the consumer in Bangladesh is not adequate from the very beginning. Customers have very few information regarding their product. As a result they often cheated by the sellers as the laws related this legal protection, are rarely active.

9 Moon, J. 2008. Implicit and explicit-CSR: conceptual frame work for a comparative understanding of corporate social responsibility

Now we will discuss the issue of the indigenous people in our country. There are more or less 45 recognized indigenous communities in Bangladesh. According to our constitution all people are equal in the eyes of state regardless of their race, religion, color. But our indigenous people are deprived from all the citizen rights. Often they are attracted by the miscreant. For example we can say that incident of the Attack on the Buddhist’s in Ramu. Still the Government has not found the guilty. And which is not desirable.

We can bring the issue of “Destiny Group”. Initially they were involved in selling consumer product, but later they became engaged in various illegal activities such as: illegal banking, tree plantation, media business, aviation business etc. At the same time the goods they sale are substandard, which hampers the interest of consumer. The seller or marketer of this group tempts customers to buy their product and also hide the negative sides of their products. So the customers are cheated by using their product.

As we discuss about theoretical aspects of the topic that the outward appearance of commodity is temporary .One may attract to commodity at a fast look for once or twice but when he understood that the commodity is substandard then he will never do it again. So if any company wants to take position in a customer mind for a long time they have to strictly maintain their quality or attributes otherwise they will struggle to survive in the market. So according to the theory of ethics all firms should maintain ethical issues strictly otherwise the phrase “Beauty is skin deep” will be a true story for them.

Recommendation

As we have discussed the issue of ethics in manufacturing sector, this issue is very important for the long run sustainability of any corporate firm. As everybody weights ethical issues over unethical practice, so every firm have to put emphasize in keeping ethical standard with other competitors. If they fail to continue their quality they will face difficulties to capture market. So it is highly recommended that all firms should maintain rules and regulation that are given by the government or regulatory body. At the same time they have also followed their commitment that they do before the customer. If they can do this, I think it would be possible for them to uphold the ethics in their business.

Conclusion

“Beauty is skin deep” is a very meaningful phrase that suggests that someone or somebody can be beautiful on the outside mean or unpleasant on the inside. This is equally true for all kind of commodities. Generally when we go to the market to purchase something then we give priority on internal qualities. Someone also primarily put emphasis on the external appearance but when they are coming to know that the external appearance is not significant, and then they realize that the intrinsic quality is the main foundation of long term sustainability of commodity.
