Software is the instruction given to a computer to perform the described task without software the computer cannot do anything. A software is a set of instruction written in the prescribed form to get proper result. It acts us an interface between user and the computer,. Thus the complete set of instructions written to solve a problem on a computer is called software.

Software causes the hardware to do work.

EX- WINDOWS XP

Types of software:

Basically software programs fall into three types:

1. System software

2. Programming software

3. Application software

SYSTEM SOFTWARE:

It facilitates the use of computers by the user and produces an environment to execute application program.

Main part of the software is operating system.

EX- PC DOS, WINDOWS

Types of system software:

System software may be divided into the following three categories:

  • LANGUAGE
  • SYSTEM PROGRAMS
  • SYSTEM UTII.ITIES

PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE:

A set of instructions written for the computer system to perform a task that is used to write the program is called programming language.

EX- BASIC, FORTRON, PASCAL, VISUAL BASIC

APPLICATION SOFTWARE:

It is the collection of programs which direct the computer to perform specific tasks resulted by a user such as airline reservation, train reservation and so on. This software is called as application software. Thousands of such programs are available to perform a wide range at business, education and scientific applications.

EX- INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION, BUSINESS SOFTWARE.

Application software is a subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly and thoroughly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should be contrasted with system software which is involved in integrating a computer’s various capabilities, but typically does not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. In this context the term application refers to both the application software and its implementation.

Typical examples of software applications are word-processorseadsheets, and media planers.

In computer science, an application is a computer program designed to help people perform a certain type of work. An application thus differs from an operating system (which runs a computer), a utility (which performs maintenance or -general-purpose chores), and a programming language (with which computer programs are created). Depending on the work for which it was designed, an application can manipulate text, numbers, graphics, or a combination of these elements. Some application packages offer considerable computing power by focusing on a single task, such as word processing; others, called integrated software, offer somewhat less power but include several applications, such as a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a database program.
